Kicking it Old School for Tod Mountain Days

Tod Mountain Days are coming and we invite you to join us in our annual end of season celebration. It’s sure to be a great time that will dry up your tears that the Sun Peaks ski season is coming to an end. Everything from April 7^th to 9^th at Sun Peaks is about fun and paying tribute to good old days at Sun Peaks when it was known as Tod Mountain.

Dig way back into your closet and pull out your best old school ski gear and one piece suits. Bright colors, stripes, snappy belts, oversized sunglasses, bulky sweaters – it’s all good. Today’s youngsters may smirk at your ski fashions of yester-year but all you need to say is…”hey, we paved the way so you can wear your plaid print board pants and those giant hyper colour goggles”. Retro weekend is an all-time favourite and the slopes are guaranteed to be lit up with retro fashions, skinny skis and old school cool.

Other weekend winter activities at Sun Peaks include the Dummy Downhill. Yes, literally translated it is indeed dummy’s strapping on skis and taking flight off near vertical ramps and crashing in explosive displays of destruction. Easter weekend would be remiss without the Easter Bunny on skis and the Egg Bonanza. Your kids will love the spin that Sun Peaks puts on the traditional Easter egg hunt.

And of course, the event that will have everyone ohhing, ahhing and saying ouch is the annual Slush Cup. Costume clad contestants strap on their board or skis and attempt to ski across a slushy, near frozen pond. While you can’t help feel the chill of the contestants crashing into cold water, the spectacle is sure to bring loads of laughs. What Makes a Great Apres Ski?

After an awesome day of cruising, carving and shredding on the slopes of Sun Peaks Resort, keep the fun going in the village with apres ski action.

So, what makes for a great apres ski? At Sun Peaks it’s all about gathering where everyone else is for good food and of course, warm-you-up cocktails. Live music is always a plus and can be experienced throughout March. Casual restaurants and pubs that are popular apres ski hangouts include; Powderhounds, Cahilty Creek Bar and Grill, Bottoms Pub & Restaurant (seen below) or at Globe Cafe & Tapas Bar. Powder Hounds is a recommended favorite for a great pub vibe and there is a family section as well.

A really great addition to events at Sun Peaks is the “Warm up with Glühwein (Gold Wine) & Hot Apple Cider”. This event takes place at Black Garlic Bistro every Saturday until April 07. Glühwein, most popularly known as Mulled Wine, is a favourite winter treat all across Europe and we now have our own little taste of it here in Sun Peaks! Glühwein is usually prepared from red wine, heated and spiced with cinnamon sticks, vanilla pods, cloves, star aniseed, citrus, sugar and a shot of rum or liqueur.

Start a new family tradition at Sun Peaks with your children and warm up at the Sports Centre Kids Pool and Aquatic Centre. The kids are sure to love jumping into an outdoor pool, especially while its snowing – how fun! There is a wonderful array of winter activities for the whole family. We have a wonderful ice skating rink that your children are definitely going to enjoy. Our rink is built with snow and cold weather, so you can be sure that the ice is strong and perfect to skate on. We also offer horse sleigh rides, dogsledding, a Tube Park, snowmobile tours, and plenty of other fun activities. Your children are never going to be bored throughout their trip, as we have plenty of activities for the little ones to enjoy.

So, we ask again, what makes a great apres ski? For many it’s loosening the ski boots and relaxing with a pint while you share stories of your day with friends. For others, it’s about savouring Glühwein alongside some great appetizers. Perhaps for you, it’s heading back to your suite at the Hearthstone Lodge to sit in front of fire with that special someone. Any which way you experience it, a great apres ski is whatever warms you up and puts a smile on your face.

This Thursday, March 22 is the last Fondue Dinner & Evening Descent event at Sun Peaks Resort.

The Fondue Dinner & Evening Descent is a truly unique experience. Board the Sunburst Express chairlift at 5:00 pm sharp for a twilight ride up to the Sunburst Restaurant where you will you will be treated to a delightful fondue accompanied by live music. After the meal you will cruise down the lantern lit slopes of the 5 Mile ski run with your guide. All guests must be capable skiers and will be provided with a headlamp for the descent. The star lit sky is the perfect backdrop for the ski down, and is a great way to end your day on the mountain.

March Break Ski Vacations – fun for everyone

Sun Peaks is near Kamloops, it is 4:30 hrs. from Vancouver and I have to say it has such a wide arrange of fun activities nobody will want to leave by the end of the trip.

In the morning for example you can take the kids to the tube park, bungee or the discounted March ski lessons. In many cases the goal of the holidays is to stay together so the Aquatic Centre, the Kamloops blazers hockey and the bungee are always good family trips. The bigger kids will love the Cat Trax groomer riders that work on the slopes every night as well as the dog-sledding and carriage rides. Sometimes it is nice to have some time off and leave the younger ones in the Play School while you take in the local apres ski scene at Powderhounds or Bottoms.

There is plenty to do and see. In fact, you may find that you have a problem deciding which activity to participate in first! Don’t worry about missing anything, though – you will probably end up coming back to experience everything. Check the Sun Peaks Resort events and arrange your schedule so that you are able to attend or participate in the planned events.

This spring break is filled with live music, Wine Lovers Mondays, Friday Race Series and the oh-so-entertaining Slush Cup. It is high season but the Hearthstone Lodge is offering cozy accommodations with kitchens and fireplaces with a “Spring Break Super Saver Special” instead of increasing rates during this time. Whether you are looking for excitement or relaxation, there is something to suit all ages when you live the Sun Peaks Resort lifestyle.

When we go on vacation, be it a 2 day getaway or a week long break, we really are looking to escape from the “same old, same old” of our day to day lives. We crave something new. For some it’s adventure and adrenaline while for others it is new scenery and meals prepared by someone else. But beyond these things we are really looking for a different lifestyle for the time we are away from our regular pace of life.

Vacations should really be called lifestyle getaways. And when your getaway is to Sun Peaks Resort you are definitely going to be living the mountain lifestyle. Exhilerating days on the slopes of Sun Peaks Resort skiing or snowboarding will get your blood pumping. An apres ski at Bottoms or Powder Hounds for a clean crisp beverage will reward you for a day of pushing your limits. But don’t take off your boots just yet. Sun Peaks Turns The Big 5-0

Known to many as Tod Mountain, now named Sun Peaks Resort turns 50 this ski season. And when you think about how the mountain has evolved in 50 years there is a lot to say!

Formerly named Tod Mountain, the first chair lift, the Burfield Chairlift began taking skiiers up the hill on November 18, 1961. At that time, it was the longest chair lift in North America. Back then this steep challenging peak had few amenities, and only the western section of what is now the resort was in use.

The majority of today’s Sun Peaks Resort was built within the last 10 years, after being purchased by Nippon Cable Company Ltd. in 1992. The company changed its name to Sun Peaks Resort Corporation in 1993, and soon thereafter the first nine holes of the Sun Peaks golf course were finished, additional runs and lifts were added.

The final nine of the golf course was completed in 2005. Also added were the village’s day lodge, a snowboard park, a 35 million-gallon snowmaking reservoir, a building and facilities for the Snowsports School, and even a whole new mountain – Mount Morrissey.

And it is not only the mountain terrain that has evolved, the sports the mountain plays host to has evolved in the last 50 years too. Since its earlier days the skis have gotten shorter, curvier, wider, and faster. Add snowboarding, telemarking, and now, even hangboarding, ski racing, velocity racing, and many more, Sun Peaks Ski Resort welcomes all sports.
